Meeting Pablo Escobar’s accountant brother Roberto was definitely up there. At the time, I had little idea of the former narcotic empire, but now watching Narco’s and Pablo Escobar: El Patron Del Mal it has got me intrigued at the goings on of these guys.
Getting my PADI scuba diving open water licence was a highlight as it ended a two-year wait to do so and finally psyche myself up. Diving in Taganga was fun.
Lost City Trek tour was a 5-day hard hike, climbing rocks, slippery mud, birdcage crossings and passing indigenous tribes. It was epic and when you’re in the deep end like that, it’s really addictive.
Colombia is now backpacker and traveller friendly and has hoards to do and see. A lot of people come here to party of course because of Colombia’s previous drug related reputation, but isn’t just about partying. It has the coast, the jungle and the mountains.
Colombian women are out of this world, seriously gorgeous!
Colombia still isn’t safe everywhere although it has gotten a lot safer than it was 8-10 years ago.
Colombia is bigger than you’d imagine and getting around seems to take forever, even if it just looks next door on the map!
Things you should know
Cocaine is cheap in Colombia and lots of travellers come to do it. It’s the truth and it can go for street value anywhere from 5-15 US dollar per gram. It’s fairly cheap in Colombia in comparison to Western costs. Don’t wear too much jewellery as it allows for people to stand out more, and more robbing potential.
